Saras can fly at a maximum speed of 550 kmph at a cruise altitude of 7.4 km. One of the main concerns is that Saras is almost 800 kg in its current avatar.

However, NAL officials say that in 24-30 months the relevant design changes will be made and all these concerns will be addressed.

The changes needed would cost Rs 30-40 crore.

The crew of Saras, including lift pilot K K Venugupal (centre), celebrates after touchdown.
