Kargil martyr's widow attempts self immolation
August 11, 2004 18:01 IST
Unable to get suitable land promised by the government for setting up a petrol pump, a widow of a Kargil martyr on Wednesday attempted self-immolation outside the residence of Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav in Lucknow, who directed that land be given to her within two days.
The life of Shakuntala Devi was saved by intervention of the police deployed there.
"It seems that my husband, Naik Chaman Singh who had laid down his life for the honour of the country on 13 June, 1999 at Torling peak had done something wrong as we have been made to run about for getting what was promised to us after his martyrdom," Devi said.
Out of the total land promised by the government, we have got a small portion and that too scattered in three different villages, she said.
She added that in the last two years she had been running to New Delhi, Mumbai and Lucknow to meet
various officials and met two chief ministers of Uttar Pradesh, Mayawati and Mulayam Singh Yadav.
The Kargil widow's extreme step elicited a response by the government and directives were issued to authorities in Noida to make the land available to her within two days time.
"She has been asked to go to Noida tomorrow for taking possession of the land for setting up the petrol filling pump," a senior official said.
He added that the chief minister intervened in the matter and asked the Noida authorities to relax the rules for alloting land for a petrol pump as there was no provision for a petrol pump in the master plan.
"The chief minister who was not present in the state capital was contacted by senior officials and Yadav directed his staff to take necessary steps to provide relief to Shakuntala Devi," he added.
