Kumbh also means colourful chaos, which is what Ujjain becomes during this month. The air is redolent with fragrance sticks and dhoop, and the colourful flags of the sadhus add a dash of vibrancy to the town. This year over 500 akhadas have set up base in the mela area.

Anti-terrorist squads have been deployed around the town and the crowds are monitored aerially.
