Graduate Programmes at Tata Institute Of Fundamental Research

The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research invites applications for its Graduate Studies Programme for the following subjects:
Subjects:
- Biology: Department of Biological Sciences, Mumbai, National Centre for Biological Sciences, Bangalore
- Chemistry: Department of Chemical Sciences, Mumbai
- Computer and System Sciences: School of Technology & Computer Science, Mumbai, Computational Mathematics Laboratory, at Pune
- Mathematics: School of Mathematics, Mumbai and Bangalore
- Physics: Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics, Department of Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Science, Department of High Energy Physics, Department of Nuclear and Atomic Physics, Department of Theoretical Physics (all at Mumbai campus), National Centre for Radio Astrophysics, Pune

Graduate School-GS 2004: Research Scholars are selected to carry out research leading to a PhD degree, typically in about five years. They receive a monthly scholarship of Rs 8,000, which is enhanced to Rs 9,500 after registration for PhD. A contingency grant (currently Rs 7,500 per annum) is given. On-campus accommodation is also provided at a nominal cost. GS 2004 will commence on August 1, 2004.
Eligibility:
- Biology: PhD Programme -- Master's degree in any Basic Science or Bachelor's degree in any Applied Science. Integrated PhD Programme -- BSc.
- All other subjects: MSc/BE/BTech/MTech degree holders or final year students with consistently good academic record. Fresh BSc graduates with an outstanding academic record.
Selection:
Written tests: These will be held at the following centres on December 14, 2003:
Bangalore (NCBS) Bhubaneshwar (Utkal University), Chennai (IIT), Delhi (Delhi University), Hyderabad (Central University), Indore (Devi Ahilya University), Kanpur (IIT), Kolkata (IICB), Mumbai (TIFR), Pune (NCRA)
Interviews: Candidates who qualify in the written test will be called for interviews as follows (some subjects may request additional application material before short-listing):
Biology - PhD -- May 2004, Bangalore.
PhD - June 2004, Bangalore.
Chemistry - June 2004, Mumbai.
Computer & System Sciences - February 2004, Mumbai.
Physics - February 2004, Mumbai.
Mathematics - March 2004, Mumbai.
How To Apply
To request a Hall Ticket, send the following:
1. Application on plain paper stating name, current address, date of birth, e-mail address, Subject in which you want to take the test (Biology/Chemistry/Computer and System Sciences/ Mathematics/Physics), the preferred centre for written test, and a detailed table of marks from 10th standard onwards.
2. Two passport photos: One pasted and one stapled to the application.
3. Stamped (Rs 15) and self-addressed envelope (25cm x 17cm) superscribed GS-2004 (Subject).
4. Demand Draft of Rs 300 (non-refundable application fee).
Biology: DD in favour of National Centre for Biological Sciences payable at Bangalore.
All other subjects: DD in favour of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research payable at Mumbai.
Applications should be mailed as follows:

All other subjects: Assistant Registrar (Academic), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Homi Bhabha Road, Colaba, Mumbai 400005
Candidates who wish to appear for the written test in multiple subjects are required to send separate applications for each subject.
Walk-In Candidates: Some candidates without hall tickets may be allowed to take the test if seats are available. They should be present at the centres one hour prior to the timing of the test and bring all original mark sheets, Demand Draft for Rs 300 and 2 photographs.
Only candidates with consistently good academic records will be sent a hall ticket for the written test and other materials. No TA/DA will be paid to the candidates appearing for the written test.
Important Dates:
October 17, 2003: Last date for receiving applications for hall tickets.
December 14, 2003: Nationwide written test (10 am - Biology And Mathematics. 1:30 pm - Chemistry, Computer & System Sciences, Physics).

The Tata Institute of Social Science (A Deemed University) announces admission to the following academic programmes 2003-2004:
Post Graduate Certificate in Research Methodology:
Eligibility: Master's Degree in Social Sciences/Social Work with at least 50% (45% for SC/ST) of the marks of grade point average of 3.0 (2.50 for SC/ST) under the UGC 7 point grade system. Application Form costs Rs 20. The last date for receipt of application is October 6, 2003.
M Phil and PhD Programmes:
Eligibility: Master's Degree of the relevant faculty with 55% (50% for SC/ST) of the marks or grade point average of 3.5 (3 for SC/ST) under the UGC 7 point grade system. However, for Social Work one-year work experience in a position related to Social Work profession is a must. Application form costs Rs 50.
Applications are accepted throughout the year.
