Sonia inquires about Kanshi Ram's health

September 19, 2003 00:48 IST

Congress Party chief Sonia Gandhi inquired over telephone the condition of ailing Bahujan Samaj Party leader Kashi Ram, who has been admitted to a private hospital in Delhi.

Party spokesman Anand Sharma, however, said no political significance should be attached to the humanitarian gesture.

Ever since the BSP-BJP alliance broke down in Uttar Pradesh, a section of party leadership has been talking about a Congress-BSP tie-up in the state and at the national level to 'take on communal and casteist forces'.

The party's decision not to join the Samajwadi Party led coalition government in Uttar Pradesh and support it only from outside was also seen in this perspective.
