A peacekeeper interacts with a villager. Drawn from 15 countries, the peacekeepers had little experience or prior training in peacekeeping activities. The mock exercise created a scenario of a conflict-ridden zone in Congo, Africa, where rival armed factions are engaged in a war. The unarmed UN personnel were acting as monitors trying to bring them to the negotiating table.
