October 11, 2003 20:08 IST
Flash floods due to incessant rains have inundated ten villages affecting 60,000 people in central Assam's Nagaon and Karbi Anglong districts, official sources said in Guwahati on Saturday.
Reports from Nagaon district said six villages under Kachua revenue circle had been inundated by the flooded Barpani river, which also breached three embankments.
The sources said that 98 per cent of the farm fields with standing crops were under water and thousands of people marooned in villages.
The rain-fed Barpani river, flowing into the neighbouring hill district of Karbi Anglong, submerged at least three villages under Baithalangsu police station, they said. The police station was also inundated forcing the policemen to move documents and armoury to higher places.
The administration has started relief and rescue operations.
