Orissa may ban trident distribution

Giridhar Gopal in Bhubaneswar | June 14, 2003 04:48 IST

The Orissa government on Friday said it is considering a ban on the trident distribution programme of the Bajrang Dal in the state.

The outfit is planning to launch the distribution programme in August to increase its organisational base, Orissa Bajrang Dal president Subash Chouhan told rediff.com.

Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, however, told the media at Bhubaneswar that he will not allow anybody to 'disturb the communal harmony of the state'.

Asked about Bajrang Dal's plans, he said, "We would stop that."

Reacting to Patnaik's statement Chouhan said, "There is nothing objectionable in the distribution of tridents and we hope the chief minister will not oppose that."
