Two dargahs (places of worship) revered mainly by Hindus on Friday came under attack in Gujarat as unidentified attackers broke into one of them and set ablaze sacred cloth, books and photographs of a priest and stoned another shrine.

Some people forced their way into a 150-year old dargah in Bhuj town in Kutch district in the wee hours and set fire to some sacred cloth, books and photographs of a priest placed on the tomb of Gabban Shah Pir. 

Petrol and papers were used to ignite the fire, Inspector J R Jehni said.

Police launched search operations and stepped up patrolling in the area, which is peaceful, he said.

More Hindus frequent the dargah than Muslims and it is even run by a Hindu trust, Jehni said.

In a separate incident on Friday evening, a mob stoned the Imam Shah Baba dargah in Pirana village in Ahmedabad district, injuring six persons.

The mob objected to Hindus hailing the name of the Sufi saint, after whom the 500-year old dargah is named, Ahmedabad (rural) DSP R B Brahmabhatt told PTI.

The DSP said the dargah epitomised communal harmony as Hindus had been offering prayers there since long.
