Doctors' strike cripples Patna, twelve dead

February 08, 2003 00:50 IST

Ten in-house patients died on Friday as health services in Patna remained crippled as doctors extended their strike by one more day.

The strike, called by the Indian Medical Association, Bihar, is to protest the abduction of orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Bharat Singh, of the Patna Medical College from Patna two days ago.

According to official sources the dead, including six children, are from the Patna Medical College and Hospital. Two more deaths had been reported on Thursday, taking the toll to 12.

Services at other hospitals and nursing homes too have been affected with doctors staying away in protest.

The IMA will meet on Saturday evening to discuss its next course of action if the police failed to rescue Dr Singh, IMA secretary Sahjanand Singh said.

All government and private doctors would remain on strike till 1700 IST tomorrow, Singh said.
