On July 30, 2003 a saffron flag was hoisted in Nashik to mark the beginning of the Kumbh Mela.

When Lok Sabha Speaker Manohar Joshi and Maharashtra Chief Minister Sushilkumar Shinde performed the dhwajarohan (flag hoisting), conchs blew and mantras were chanted.

More than 2,100 police personnel have been deployed to control the sea of devotees thronging the city. Twenty ambulances, 100 doctors and nurses are on their toes in case of medical emergencies.
