Janmashtami marks the birth of Lord Krishna, who was born under the Rohini nakshatram (star) on Bhadrapad Krishna Ashtami (the eighth day of the waning moon in the Hindu month of Shravan). The festival is also known as Sri Krishna Jayanti and Gokulashtami.
Here members of the Shivaji Vyayam Shala, Parel, prepare to break a dahi handi (pot of curd) at Lalbaug in central Mumbai, in celebration of the mischief of the young Krishna.
