When an earthquake devastated Gujarat in 2001 as the rest of India celebrated Republic Day, the Indian Army was the first to spring into action. The army called off its annual winter exercise and asked soldiers to report to earthquake-affected areas.
An army spokesman described it as one of the biggest-ever disaster assistance mobilisations in its history.
