BJP's standoff with UP dissidents continues

The standoff between the Bharatiya Janata Party leadership and dissident party legislators in Uttar Pradesh showed no signs of easing on Friday.

The rebels were adamant on their demand that the party should withdraw its ministers from the Mayawati-led government and extend outside support to it.

BJP general secretary Rajnath Singh, who met several dissidents, said there was resentment among a section of them, but it was not for "Cabinet berths". He added that a solution would soon be achieved.

Ganga Bhakt Singh, the convenor of the 'Save BJP Committee' formed by the dissidents, on Thursday said the party had deviated from its principles and policies.

Singh said their fight was to save and restore the party's glory and not for ministerial berths, as being propagated by the state leadership.

He said senior BJP leader Lalji Tandon and state unit president Vinay Katiyar were aggravating the situation by threatening the dissidents with disciplinary action.

"We have been awaiting disciplinary action for the last four days," he said, adding they were ready to make any sacrifice for the party.
