Bihar villagers punish
widow for remarrying

The Bihar police have registered a case against a group of villagers for allegedly assaulting a widow for remarrying, under Bagaha block in West Champaran district, police said on Sunday.

Asha got married to Bhikhari Mahato, a widower, at Majhaulia village, which infuriated some villagers, police said.

A group of them physically assaulted Asha and her husband on November 11, police said.

She was dragged out of her house and paraded her after tonsuring her, they said.

The couple was allegedly ex-communicated by the villagers and ordered to leave the village, forcing them to approach the court for justice.

A case was registered on Saturday following a directive by the additional chief judicial magistrate in Bagaha who was acting on a complaint filed by the victims.
