16 elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha

After some hiccups over the wild card entry of arms dealer Suresh Nanda, all 11 candidates from Uttar Pradesh were elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha.

Five more were elected unopposed from Jammu and Kashmir and Uttaranchal.

In a development that brought relief to the beleaguered Bahujan Samaj Party-Bharatiya Janata Party government in Uttar Pradesh, Nanda's nomination papers were rejected paving the way for unopposed election of BJP leaders Rajnath Singh and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.

Nanda's nomination papers, sponsored by rebel BJP legislators, were rejected after the Election Commission found that he had "fraudulently" got his name entered into the electoral rolls in Ghaziabad.

Delhi-based hotelier Lalit Suri was elected to the Rajya Sabha through a bypoll held for the seat vacated by BJP's T N Chaturvedi, who quit the upper House following his appointment as Karnataka governor.
