Court convicts 14 in
Coomar Narain spy case

Almost two decades after the sensational Coomar Narain Spy case was unearthed, a designated Delhi court on Tuesday convicted 14 persons for passing off military secrets to agents of other countries.

The case pertains to a spy racket busted on January 17, 1985 with the arrest of Coomar Narain, Delhi-based manager of S L M Maneklal Industries.

Narain, the main accused, used to pass on highly classified government documents pertaining to industrial licensing, defence and economic policies to some officials in embassies of certain European countries.

Special Judge R K Gauba found the 14 guilty under Section 120B of Indian Penal Code and under various provisions of the Official Secrets Act.

The judge directed the police to take the accused into custody while fixing July 18 for pronouncement of the sentence.

However, Narain escaped conviction as he died on March 20, 2000 while the trail was on.
