Three security personnel, M S Negi, J P Yadav and woman constable Kamlesh Kumari, who sacrificed their lives in the face of the terrorist attack on Parliament were on Saturday decorated with the nation's highest peace time gallantry award, Ashok Chakra.
Yadav and Negi, both security assistants in the Rajya Sabha Watch and Ward Staff and Kamlesh Kumari were on duty on the fateful day of December 13.
Though unarmed, they gallantly faced the first onslaught of the heavily armed Pakistani terrorists, who had managed to sneak into Parliament House premises.
Five Delhi policemen, attached to the Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Krishan Kant's security entourage, who also were gunned down in the attack, were decorated with Kirti Chakra, the nation's second highest peace time gallantry award.
The next of the kin of all the three Ashok Chakra winners will receive the honours from the President before the start of the Republic Day parade.
The fourth recipient of the Ashok Chakra is Naik Rambeer Singh of Rashtriya Rifles, who gave up his life while confronting three dreaded foreign mercenaries in anti-militancy operations in Jammu and Kashmir.
These gallant officers are among 422 officers and men of the armed forces decorated in this year's Republic Day honours list.
These include 21 Param Vishisht Sewa Medals (PVSMs), nine Kirti Chakras, 44 Athi Vishisht Sewa Medals (AVSMs), 31 Shaurya Chakras, one Vir Chakra, 140 Sena medals, 18 Vayu Sena medals, 20 Nau Sena medals and 141 Vishisht Sewa Medals (VSMs).
