Fernandes visits site of explosion near Bikaner

Defence Minister George Fernandes on Saturday made an on-the-spot inspection of the site at the ordnance sub-depot at Udasar, where a series of explosions claimed two lives and destroyed 80 ammunition laden army trucks on Friday night.

Fernandes, accompanied by Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and some top army officials, went round the area.

About 250 army trucks, carrying explosives were stationed there, when a major fire broke out at the army's ammunition depot, about 10 km from Bikaner.

Army officials had said electrical sparks in one of the trucks triggered the blast and fire engulfed nearby vehicles.

A court of enquiry has already been ordered into the mishap, the third of its kind in the last two years in the Rajasthan sector.
