Army troops Wednesday morning laid siege to a mosque in village Bamrood in the northern Baramulla district to flush out two to three militants believed holed up inside.
Senior police officials said heavy exchange of fire is continuing between the militants and the security forces.
"The troops came under heavy fire from the militants hiding in the mosque when they tried to go in," a police official said requesting anonymity.
He said two militants are hiding in the mosque, while a third is holed up in an adjacent house.
Reinforcements have been rushed to the spot and the village has been cordoned off.
Senior police and army officers are already on the spot.
In October last year, security forces had stormed a mosque and killed a militant after a 24-hour battle at village Panzan, Budgam in central Kashmir.
