EC files appeal in Supreme Court against Allahabad high court order

The Election Commission on Tuesday filed an appeal in the Supreme Court challenging the Allahabad high court order, which ruled that a person having his name in the voters list can cast his vote even without having a photo identity card.

The EC appeal said that the Commission had suggested 18 alternate modes of identity to enable a voter to exercise his franchise and the high court order was 'wrong'.

The Allahabad high court had ruled on Monday that a person whose name figures in the voters list can cast his vote unless his identity is challenged and found false.

The high court order was passed on Public Interest Litigation, filed by one Umesh Chand Jaiswal and others, challenging the Election Commission's order making the photo identity card mandatory for casting votes.
