Vijay Goel, minister of state in the PMO who has known Vajpayee for about 30 years, asked the prime minister recently: "Who has inspired you most?"

"My father Krishan Bihari Vajpayee; (the RSS' second sarsanghchalak) Guru Golwalkar; (the late Jana Sangh president) Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya; and (RSS leader) Bhaurao Deoras," the premier replied.
