SGPC to appeal against Sajjan Kumar's acquittal

December 24, 2002 08:41 IST

Expressing 'shock and disbelief' over the acquittal of Congress leader Sajjan Kumar and others in the anti-Sikh riots case by a Delhi court, Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee president Kirpal Singh Badungar on Monday said an appeal would be filed against the verdict in the higher court.

"If those responsible for the murder of Sikhs and the trauma of their widows are freed, the Sikhs would lose faith in courts," he said. The judgment has shaken the entire Sikh community, he added.

Expressing anguish over the acquittals, Akal Takht jathedar Joginder Singh Vedanti said, "This act has once again opened the 18-year-old wounds of the Sikhs."
