Senior Basti officials removed over police firing

The Uttar Pradesh government on Thursday removed Industrial Development Commissioner Jitendra Vishnu, District Magistrate Deepak Kumar and Senior Superintendent of Police (Basti) K K Tripathi following Wednesday's clash between Bharatiya Kisan Union activists and the police in Munderwa Baazar area.
Agitating BKU workers were removed from the railway tracks by the Rapid Action Force and Provincial Armed Constabulary.
One hundred and forty-two BKU activists were arrested after being removed from the tracks. Railway traffic was later restored. RAF and PAC men have been deployed in the area and the situation is normal, sources said.
According to sources, one activist was killed in police firing and 22 others, including 13 policemen, were injured when farmers protesting against the non-payment of arrears and delay in commencement of cane crushing fought a pitched battle with police.
The BKU, however, claims that at least three of its activists were killed and 100 others injured in the police action.
Meanwhile, amid pandemonium over the police firing, the Lok Sabha was adjourned on Thursday for half-an-hour with agitating Samajwadi Party and Rashtriya Janata Dal members being adamant on the admission of their notices for an adjournment motion.
