Nawaz Sharief's nomination papers accepted

Pakistani election officials on Thursday accepted the nomination forms of exiled former prime minister Nawaz Sharief to contest the October general election, sources said in Islamabad.

Sharief filed his papers from two seats in Lahore.

The acceptance of his nomination papers comes as a big blow for the Musharraf government, which had brought in a new rule barring convicted persons from contesting polls.

Sharief was convicted and sentenced to life for preventing the plane carrying General Pervez Musharraf from landing in Karachi during the military coup in October 1999.

After that he was exiled to Jeddah following a deal between Pakistan and Saudi Arabian governments.
