Delhi corporator murdered, colleague held

The Delhi police said on Tuesday that Congress Municipal Councillor Atma Ram Gupta, who went missing on Saturday, had been murdered and fellow party Corporator Sharda Jain and her brother Raj Kumar were arrested in this connection.

The two got Gupta murdered and the body was disposed off "somewhere in western UP", Joint Commissioner of Police Ajay Chadha said.

They were taken to UP in order to locate the body of the slain Congress leader.

On Wednesday, Jain and Kumar would be produced before the Tees Hazari court.

Incidentally, Gupta had brought Jain into politics and she had won the Keshav Puram seat on a Congress ticket only recently.

Chadha told rediff.com that relations between the two councillors had not been cordial for some time.

"They had good relations until a few months back. Now they were not getting along well. Since it is a personal matter I would not like to go into the details of the nature of relationship between the two," he said.

According to police sources, Jain was jealous of Gupta's relationship with other women, particularly Councillor Memwati Barwala.

On Saturday, Gupta and Jain went to attend a Congress rally addressed by party president Sonia Gandhi at the Ferozshah Kotla grounds.

While Jain returned to her house at 1700 hours, Gupta did not show up at his place. His family members lodged a complaint with the police saying he had been abducted.

During initial investigations, Jain told the police that Gupta had had got off her car at the Inter-State Bus Terminal at Kashmiri Gate after attending the rally.

However, later she confessed that she had paid two killers Rs 60,000 to get Gupta killed.

She had taken Gupta to Gaziabad on the pretext of showing him a piece of land that she intended to buy. Once they reached the spot, the killers pumped bullets into Gupta's chest and threw the body in a canal. Her brother was there at that time.

Subash Chopra, the president of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee, has expelled Jain from the party.
