Cong incapable of forming coalition government: Advani

Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani on Saturday claimed that the Congress was incapable of forming a coalition government at the Centre.

Proposing the 'Delhi Pledge' at the party's national council meeting in New Delhi, he said the BJP adopted the strategy of coalitions in 1996 even after emerging as the single largest party in Parliament. "It is not easy for the Congress to adopt such a policy," he said.

He said the National Democratic Alliance experiment had strengthened federalism and the Vajpayee government was more representative in character, both geographically and socially, than the first non-Congress government at the Centre led by Morarji Desai, which hardly had any representation from the South and the East.

Top BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, party chief Venkaiah Naidu, Finance Minister Jaswant Singh and Human Resources Development Minister Murli Manohar Joshi, were seated on the dais at the meeting.

Regretting that some party workers put personal agenda before that of the organisation, Advani said the party would achieve success if workers at all levels performed to the best of their ability.
