SIMI national president held in Delhi

Four prominent office bearers of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India, including its national president Shahid Badr and a municipal councillor, were arrested in New Delhi, as police continued its crackdown on the radical Islamic outfit.

Badr, along with Saif Naheed, Mohd Khalid and Irfan were arrested from the Zakir Nagar office of the outfit in south Delhi under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, Joint Commissioner of Police Amod Kanth said on Friday morning.

Badr originally belongs to Azamgarh district of Uttar Pradesh.

"They were arrested as they continued to hold public meetings and provoke people for violence, despite our appeal not to do so," Kanth said.

The police also arrested Asif Mohd Khan, the controversial municipal councillor from Okhla, on charges of causing communal disaffection, he said.
