Budgam mosque siege continues

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

The siege around the Jamia Mosque at Panzan in the central Budgam district continued for the third day on Monday, where a militant is holed up.

A senior police officer told this correspondent that the cordon around the mosque was further tightened on Sunday evening and more troops were deployed.

"Hopefully we will neutralise him," said the officer on condition of anonymity.

The police sources said several teargas shells were lobbed into the mosque to force the militant out.

The security forces also fired towards the mosque after the militant hurled a hand grenade and fired from his assault rifle.

One special police officer was injured.

Members of the special operations group of the state police made attempts to enter the mosque.

"Intermittent firing exchange is continuing between the holed up militant and the security forces who have laid a siege around the mosque. We could hear sounds of gun fire," said witnesses.

"It is almost certain that there is only one militant holed up inside the mosque," said the Kashmir range police chief Dr A K Bhan. He said that security force cordon was continuing.
