Pakistani troops step up firing in
Akhnoor, Chamba sectors

Pakistani troops have stepped up firing in Akhnoor and Chamba sectors along the International Border and the Line of Control in Jammu division since Wednesday night, official sources said.

The Pakistani troops, using small arms, have been firing in Baliazmat area in Akhnoor sector and some forward posts in Chamba sector.

No loss of life or damage to property has been reported from the Indian side so far, the sources said, adding that our troops have "effectively retaliated" the enemy fire.

The posts involved in the firing from the Indian side include Mikowal, Bindi, Chinage, Devigarh, New Knacha Check, Gol Pattan and Chinore.

Exchange of fire between Border Security Force troops and Pakistani rangers has also taken place in Kathua, Sambha and R S Pura sectors.

Meanwhile, officials said that Pakistani troops also raked the entire area from Gole Pattan to Chicken Neck, an eight km stretch zigzagging through slushy fields and dense wild crops on the northwest of Jammu, with gunfire.

The Indian side was retaliating, but Pakistanis were 'escalating gunfire every moment', said a Border Security Force official.

"It is very, very heavy firing," said the official of the BSF.

The firing was coming from regular Pakistani troops and not the border guards, the official added. There have been no casualties so far.
