George Fernandes was on Monday re-inducted into the Union Cabinet.
President K R Narayanan administered the oath of office and secrecy to Fernandes in a brief function at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Vice-president Krishan Kant, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Lok Sabha Speaker G M C Balayogi were present on the occasion.
Harin Pathak, a Bharatiya Janata Party MP from Gujarat, who quit the NDA ministry last year after being chargesheeted in a murder case, was also sworn in as a minister of state.
Fernandes had resigned as defence minister in March last year in the wake of Tehelka expose on corruption in defence deals.
Fernandes is likely to get back the defence portfolio.
External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh, Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani and Information and Broadcasting Minister Sushma Swaraj were also present at the swearing-in ceremony.
