Crisis Management Group meeting in progress

Rediff Team

The Crisis Management Group of the civil aviation ministry has been convened and its meeting is in progress at Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan (ministry headquarters) in Delhi to take stock of the situation following the hijack of the Bombay-Delhi Alliance Air Flight CD444.

Union Home Minister L K Advani, National Security Adviser Brajesh Mishra, Foreign Secretary Chokila Iyer, Civil Aviation Minister Shahnawaz Hussain, heads of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), and Civil Aviation Secretary A H Jung are present at the meeting.

An urgent meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security has also been called at 0400 hours (IST) while all airports in the country have been placed on red alert.

The plane is now parked at runway no 10 between the domestic and international airports. A tanker has been parked in front of the aircraft to prevent it from taking off.

The pilot has informed the control tower in Delhi airport that the 54 persons, including crew members, on board the aircraft are safe.

Members of the Delhi police bomb squad, ambulances, fire engines and other officials are on stand-by to attend to any emergency.

Delhi Police Commissioner Ajai Raj Sharma arrived at the airport, but left immediately to attend the CMG meeting.
