Manipur speaker stakes claim to form govt

In a dramatic move, Manipur Assembly Speaker Sapam Dhananjoy Singh on Monday staked claim to form a new government in the state and said he had been elected the new leader of the Progressive Democratic Alliance.

He told PTI that he has submitted a letter to Governor Ved Prakash Marwah through his secretary staking claim to form the next ministry in the state.

"I am going to meet the governor on Tuesday at 11 am and apprise him of the necessity to form a stable government led by the Manipur State Congress Party," he said.

Dhananjoy, who entered assembly on an MSCP ticket, said he was elected as the new leader of the PDA during a meeting of all alliance partners at Manipur Bhavan in New Delhi on Sunday.

He, however, added he had not yet resigned from the post of speaker.
