Onkar Singh in New Delhi
Manipur appeared headed for President's rule on Monday after two major political formations in the state - one led by the Bharatiya Janata Party and the other by the Samata Party - decided not to stake claim to form the government.
The decision followed a 45-minute joint meeting of BJP and Samata leaders at the former's central office in New Delhi.
A joint statement by the two parties said the central and state leaderships reviewed the political developments in Manipur and unanimously decided to stay away from the process of government formation.
The state was plunged into a crisis after the Samata Party-led coalition government lost a vote of confidence on May 21 mainly because of BJP MLAs voting against the motion.
The Samata, a crucial partner in the BJP-led ruling National Democratic Alliance at the Centre, threatened to withdraw support if its government was not restored in Manipur.
"The central and state leadership of BJP and Samata Party reviewed the political developments in Manipur. The meeting unanimously resolved that both BJP and Samata will remain outside the process of government formation in Manipur in teh wake of the recent developments. Both parties will inform the governor accordingly. Both the parties have also decided to put the unfortunate development of the last few weeks behind them and act together to create conditions to end the perpetual state of uncertainty in the politics of Manipur, so that the people of Manipur get a chance to build a better future," the joint statement said.
The statement was signed by the BJP president Jana Krishnamurthy and his Samata party counterpart George Fernandes.
