5 killed in AP building crash

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

Five dead bodies were recovered and 10 persons were rescued even as 25 others lay trapped under the debris of a building under construction at Karepalli village in Khammam district in Andhra Pradesh on Saturday night.

An official at the Khammam district collectorate told this correspondent over the telephone that the mishap occurred around 2000 hours IST.

A private engineering college building was under construction at the village. The portico of the building collapsed, trapping the labourers under the debris.

District Collector A Giridhar, Joint Collector D K Rayudu, the superintendent of police and other officials have gone to the spot, with men and equipment, to organise relief and rescue operations.

Heavy duty equipment and rescue personnel from the Singareni Collieries Company are also being sent to the site, the official pointed out.
