George, PM fail to reach agreement

Tara Shankar Sahay in New Delhi

The crucial talks between Samata Party leader George Fernandes and Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Tuesday over the issue of the former's support to the National Democratic Alliance government following the developments in Manipur remained inconclusive. Another meeting has now been scheduled for May 28.

"All of us discussed the Manipur situation and there will be more meetings to reach a conclusion to resolve the problem," said Fernandes.

The prime minister was assisted by Bharatiya Janata Party chief K Jana Krishnamurthy and BJP general secretary Padmanabh Acharya.

Asked whether the Samata Party would remain in the NDA, Fernandes shot back, "It is a part of the NDA."

The former defence minister also informed reporters that the Samata Party's legislators from Manipur would be coming to New Delhi on May 28 to resolve the matter.
