Fernandes refuses to meet PM's aides

Tara Shankar Sahay in New Delhi

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's emissaries Sudheendra Kulkarni (Officer on Special Duty, Prime Minister's Office) and Bharatiya Janata Party parliamentarian Vijay Goel could not meet National Democratic Alliance convenor and Samata Party leader George Fernandes, who is attending the national executive meeting of his party, at the International Youth Hostel on Monday.

Kulkarni and Goel, who had come to meet Fernandes, following his decision to skip the NDA meeting at the prime minister's residence, were told by Samata Party leader Prabhunath Singh that Fernandes was busy.

"George saab is very busy now. He cannot meet you. He will talk directly to the prime minister," Singh told the emissaries.

Later, Singh told reporters that the issue being discussed by the Samata Party national executive "is a tricky matter; it is not so simple".

He pointed out that the fall of the Samata Party Government in Manipur is a "serious matter, for which the BJP has to take responsibility". Significantly, Fernandes expressed inability to attend the NDA meeting at the prime minister's residence after the fall of the Manipur government of the Samata Party.
