Samata wants BJP whip for Manipur vote

The Samata Party Sunday said it would seriously consider withdrawing from the National Democratic Alliance government at the Centre unless the Bharatiya Janata Party gave a firm assurance on issuing whip to its party MLAs in Manipur to support its government during the confidence vote on Monday.

"We had written to them (BJP) on Saturday to issue the whip. But they are refusing to do so. They are assuring us on issuing the whip but the results have been opposite," Samata Party's former president Jaya Jaitley told reporters in New Delhi.

"We will withdraw from the government. But will support NDA on issues. However, we will take the decision in this regard at Monday's (National Executive) meeting," she said.

The 12-member Samata Party said it would reconsider its participation in the NDA government at its National Executive meeting on Monday.

The move comes in the wake of what Samata Party sees as an attempt by BJP MLAs in Manipur to bring down the Samata party-led People's Front government in the state.
