EC dismisses Mamata's charge

"The EC is a three-member commission of equals and all decisions on the recently concluded elections have been taken jointly and unanimously.

"Therefore, whatever despicable remarks have been made against Gill are necessarily a reflection against the entire commission and are categorically dismissed as beneath contempt", it said in an unusually strong press note.

A day after the electoral rout of her party, Banerjee had alleged on Monday that "the entire administration and the Election Commission worked for a particular party. The EC even changed observers during polling day... Despite repeated attempts I could not contact Gill on polling day. Whenever I called up, Gill was neither in his office nor at his residence."

She alleged that Gill had been "purchased" and might be given some office after his retirement soon.

The commission issued the press note shortly after a meeting Election Commissioners J N Lyngdoh and T S Krishnamurthy had with other senior officers in the Commission.
