Cong, Sena demand Chohan's arrest

The return of Khalistan protagonist Jagjit Singh Chohan met with growing opposition on Friday as the Punjab Congress and Shiv Sena demanded his arrest, while BJP denied that Centre had given "any assurance" to him.

Punjab Congress President Amrinder Singh said Chohan and other supporters of Khalistan should be arrested on sedition charges as their return would "destabilise" Punjab.

He also accused the Centre and the Akali Dal government of according special treatment to Chohan with an eye on the coming assembly elections in the state.

But the BJP categorically stated that the government has not given any kind of assurance to Chohan and action would be taken against him if he violated the law of the land.

"There is no such understanding," party general secretary Maya Singh said.

Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal said the state government would "keep a watch" on activities of Chohan and act according to law if warranted.

Meanwhile, Delhi Shiv Sena criticised allowing the Sikh militant leaders to return to India and alleged there was a "well thought out conspiracy of Akali politics in Punjab."

Chohan, who was finance minister in the Laxman Singh Gill Ministry in 1967-70, went into exile in Britain on May 15, 1980 at the height of militancy in Punjab.
