British home secretary to probe into links
between recent racial clashes

British Home Secretary David Blunkett is to investigate links between disturbances in Burnley, Oldham, suburbs of Manchester city and Leeds.

Home Office Minister John Denham on Monday said David Blunkett was seeking advice on any 'common elements' in the clashes.

In a statement in the House of Commons, Denham expressed 'disgust at the criminal violence and the mindless acts of provocation which preceded it'.

He said underlying problems should be tackled at the local level.

Violence had flared in the northern towns of Leeds and Oldham in recent weeks. Police have been meeting Asian leaders in the town to defuse the tension.
