19 Indians feared drowned in Slovakia

Nineteen illegal Indian immigrants drowned in the River Morava, while trying to cross into the Czech Republic, the Slovak police said Wednesday.

A Slovak border guard, late on Monday night, heard screams, and then saw bodies floating in the river.

Police later found and rescued a man, who said that he was part of a group of 20 Indian refugees that was trying to cross into the Czech Republic and then into Germany.

Police on the Czech side of the border have not found the rest of the group.

The police said hundreds of refugees cross over every year, and that many die while trying to get across the river, which forms a natural border with the Czech Republic.

The Indian embassy in Bratislava is said to be in contact with the Slovak authorities.
