Jagjit Chauhan's bail application rejected

The Punjab and Haryana high court Wednesday dismissed an application by separatist Sikh leader Jagjit Singh Chauhan, for anticipatory bail, fearing arrest on arrival in India.

Disposing of the application, filed by Chauhan's lawyer on Tuesday, Justice M S Gill asked the petitioner to place on record all original travel documents sent by Chauhan from London.

The application said although there was no criminal case against Chauhan, the Centre and the state government, which are against his return to the country, may implicate the Sikh leader in a false case and arrest him on arrival.

The high court, while allowing a writ petition filed by Chauhan on May 29, had directed the Centre to provide him travel documents within a month.

The court had also directed the Centre to hold an inquiry after his return, whether he ceased to be an Indian citizen and held another country's citizenship.

The counsel for Chauhan, who is planning to come to India, later said he would soon file another application in court, with original documents.
