Nine Assam Rifles jawans killed

Nine Assam Rifles jawans were killed and another was injured on Wednesday, when suspected militants blasted their truck with grenades and automatic weapons near Margherita, in Assam's Tinsukia district.

This is the third major attack on securitymen since the Tarun Gogoi government assumed office last month.

The militants rained fire from AK-47s and machine guns and hurled grenades from both sides of the road at a truck of the 28 Assam Rifles, near the Namdang colliery, Margherita Sub-divisional Officer (Civil) R Duara said over the telephone.

The jawans, driving up from Changlang camp in Arunachal Pradesh, initially retaliated, but were overcome by firepower from the ultras, who kept up the barrage for an hour, he said.

The bodies are yet to identified as they were charred by the grenade blasts.

The militants took away all arms and ammunition of the jawans and the truck was wrecked, the SDO said.

Tinsukia Deputy Commissioner Samir Kumar Sinha and Superintendent of Police Mukesh Agarwal have gone to the spot.

Senior army officials, including those from the 28 Assam Rifles from Arunachal Pradesh, were also at the ambush site, official sources said.

On June 7, 12 Central Reserve Police Force constables were seriously injured in a twin assault by the United Liberation Front of Asom on a CRPF camp and Dhupdhara police station in lower Assam's Goalpara district.

On June 4, ULFA militants attacked Patacharkuchi police station in lower Assam's Barpeta district with rockets and AK-47 assault rifles, injuring two passers-by.

Ten Adivasi woodcutters were also mowed down by ultras the day before in Kokrajhar district, marking the first incident of violence since the new government came to power.
