Blast in tanker in Arabian
sea; all aboard safe

All 42 persons aboard an empty tanker from Singapore, cruising in the Arabian sea, were reported safe after an explosion on Tuesday inside a compartment, coast guard officials said.

The incident took place when the ship was in deep seas, some 740 km away from new Mangalore.

Deputy Commandant, Goast Guard, S Jena said in Bombay that accumulation of gas inside a closed compartment caused the blast on the ship, which had four tanks.

The hall of the tanker (outside structure) was safe but it suffered some internal damage, he said.

The tanker was heading for Goa after a safety check by the coast guard for its onward journey.
