Speight's new lawyer
confident of winning case

A correspondent in Suva

Fiji rebel leader George Speight's new lawyer Navin Naidu Thursday said he was confident of winning the case.

He told the local media that he would call up to 3000 witnesses in support of Speight.

Naidu, who arrived in Fiji on Wednesday night, said he would win the case "on an indigenous platform".

The 53-year-old lawyer had hailed Speight as a patriot.

He said that he was not condoning what Speight did, but it was his job to unravel the 'mysteries'.

"Did he overthrow the government?" he asked. "If he did, then why isn't the people's coalition government of Mahendra Chaudhry not running the government now that he has been charged with treason?"

He said he was here "to defend a Christian brother".

The Singapore-born lawyer studied in India and England before settling in Seattle in the United States.
