Security Forces on Monday morning laid a siege around a shrine at village Goigam near Magam, 23 km from the summer capital Srinagar, where four militants were holed up.
The militants holed up inside the mosque opened fire from automatic weapons on the troops outside. The security forces also returned the fire.
According to latest reports, one top militant was killed while another one was wounded.
"Two militants are still holed up inside and are firing from their automatic weapons on the troops," said a police official.
Police sources said troops laid the siege immediately on a specific information that four militants were hiding inside the shrine of Syed Mohammad Ali at Goigam in Central Budgam district.
A police officer said, "We have reports that top Hizbul Mujahadeen militant Mustaffa is holed up inside."
The situation in the area was tense. Senior police and security force officers are supervising the operation.
It may be mentioned that on June 12 this year troops stormed a mosque at village Shangus in southern Anantnag district, killing six militants.
Earlier in May, two militants holed up in a mosque at Shopian were given safe passage by the authorities after a siege laid by the army was lifted.
