38 ultras gunned down in stepped up
anti-militancy operations in J&K

Mukhtar Ahmed in Srinagar

In stepped-up anti-militancy operations, security forces on Sunday gunned down 38 militants in separate incidents in Jammu and Kashmir.

In the biggest operation of its kind in the last one year, 18 militants were killed during a massive combing operation in the hilly Mandi area of Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Police sources told rediff.com that army troops mounted the operation following specific information about the presence of militants in Hill Kaka area of Mandi in Poonch district, nearly 400 kms from Srinagar, on Sunday afternoon.

During the combing operation troops came under fire from the militants, the sources said.

In retaliatory fire the troops gunned down 18 militants, most of them foreigners. A huge quantity of arms and ammunition has been recovered from the site of the encounter.

Massive searches were mounted in the area, the sources added.

Troops had been put on maximum alert in the entire Jammu region on the eve of the visit of Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf.

In an adjacent area, two militants were killed in a gun battle, which followed a combing operation by security forces.

Meanwhile, a defence spokesman in Srinagar said that army personnel killed five heavily-armed militants at Anjalikot in Baramulla district when they intruded from across the border.

Four more Pakistani intruders were killed by the army in a fierce gunbattle in the Keran sector of Kupwara on Saturday evening, he said.

He added that three infiltrators were also killed near the LoC at Paro in Uri sector on Saturday.

Elsewhere in the Valley, six militants and a policeman were among six people killed in separate incidents.
