Poonch district of J&K

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Eighteen militants were killed in an encounter with security forces during a massive combing operation in the hilly Mandi area in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday.

Police sources told rediff.com that army troops mounted a massive combing following specific information on the presence of militants in Hill Kaka area of Mandi in Poonch district, nearly 400 kms from Srinagar, on Sunday afternoon.

During the massive combing operation, police said, troops came under fire from the militants.

Sources said the troops gunned down 18 militants, most of them foreigners, in the encounter. A huge quantity of arms and ammunition has been recovered from the site of the encounter.

Massive searches were mounted in the area, the sources added.

This is the biggest operation of this nature in the last one year in which such a large number of militants were gunned down by security forces in the state.

Troops had been put on maximum alert in the entire Jammu region on the eve of the visit of Pakistan President Gen Pervez Musharraf.

In an adjacent area, two militants were killed in a gun battle which followed a combing operation by security forces.
