Forensic expert refuses to examine
alleged Midnapore victims

Rifat Jawaid in Calcutta

The drama surrounding the dead bodies that arrived in Calcutta from Midnapore on Tuesday night further deepened after A K Gupta, Director of the state Forensic Department, reportedly refused to examine the decomposed corpses and perform a post-mortem.

The morgue opened at 1130 hours (IST) with the arrival of Gupta. Amidst unprecedented security, officials allowed Trinamul Congress leaders to enter the premises.

Some time later, senior Trinamul leader Pankaj Banerjee, however, told waiting media persons that Gupta had 'complained of non-availability of relevant documents relating to the dead bodies'.

"I am shocked to know that all dead bodies were brought to Calcutta without the relevant papers. Clearly, this indicates a well-planned conspiracy by the ruling Left Front government to hush up the matter. We are convinced that these bodies are of Trinamul supporters brutally murdered in Garbeta by the CPI-M armed cadres," Banerjee added.

Gupta reportedly expressed his displeasure at the manner in which basic procedures were bypassed while transferring the bodies from the Kharagpur sub-divisional hospital to the morgue in Calcutta.

According to Banerjee, Gupta further told Trinamul leaders that he allowed the bodies to be kept inside the morgue even without the relevant papers purely on humanitarian grounds.

The Trinamul's leader in Parliament Sudip Bandopaddhyay told rediff.com that Gupta's confession had come in sharp contrast with what Deputy Inspector General of Police (public relation) Gautam Chakraborty had told reporters on Tuesday night.

Chakraborty had informed that the dead bodies were those related to three different cases in Pingla block of Midnapore district and not that of Garbeta's alleged victims as the Trinamul claimed.

"In that case, why is the forensic director complaining of missing papers? The papers will soon arrive since they are being manufactured in Alimuddin Street (Communist Party of India-Marxist state headquarters)," Bandopaddhyay said sarcastically.

Significantly, Chakraborty was not present at the morgue on Wednesday morning.

Another Trinamul leader Sobhandeb Chattopaddhyay said that relatives of Garbeta victims had left for Calcutta and were expected to arrive late afternoon to identify their kin.

Meanwhile, Banerjee also alleged that a woman Trinamul activist Sujata Das was gang-raped in Midnapore district on January 9 before being killed mercilessly. He claimed that eye-witnesses identified the culprits to be CPI-M supporters.
